I (Deep Banerjee, Founder - Indian Roadie and associated forums) never use online navigation maps while on highways. 

The ubiquitous white letterings on green overhead road signages give me a fair idea of which place is where and the distances of places from where the photos are clicked. 

Here's one such board at the entrance of Atal Tunnel at Rohtang La, HP.
